Founded by brothers Adolf 'Adi' and Rudolf 'Rudi' Dassler, the Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik split following World War II after severe personal and political disagreements. Rudolf registered Puma in 1948 and Adolf established Adidas in 1949, setting up competing headquarters on opposite sides of the Aurach River in Herzogenaurach, Germany, and sparking a corporate and family rivalry that lasted for decades.
